We treasure the ephemeral
but take for granted
that which will stay.
We seek that which
we cannot have,
but squander
what we have.
We crave love
yet hold back
from freely giving
or openly receiving.
We desire freedom
but build our own cages.
We want openness,
yet we guard our hearts
and hide under masks.
And in chasing after
hopes, dreams and promises,
we find ourselves
back at the starting point,
jaded and worse for the wear.
Are these our shared idiosyncrasies
or just sad ironies of life?
